There’s something addictive about fishing.
Being on the water can bring excitement, frustration, fury – a whole mix of emotions – but when we’re away from the bank or shore, we’re forever thinking about it. Dreaming about it. Planning the next trip.
Some of our best memories are of spending time alone, or with mates, casting and hoping that something will come along and eat whatever we’ve thrown out there.
What are those memories worth?
Some anglers keep a fishing journal to keep the memories alive. Where, when, how, with whom. Returning from the water, all details are recorded with pen and ink in a book.
I tried it myself... and it didn't last. Just back from fishing, I was too tired to sit down with a pen and write everything down. And the next day or a few days later? I found recollections already becoming a bit hazy.
Like many anglers, I've always taken photos of the fish I catch. I could pick up my phone at any time and scroll through images of me holding fish, and get real pleasure from the memory of that moment of success.
Then I started finding the whole experience a bit, well, hollow. Yes, I could see the fish and know that I had caught it. But memories are enhanced by context: what happened before, during and after the capture. And a fish pic on its own is…just a photo of a fish!
